The Origin of the Headache of Sinusitis

Abstract
The chracteristics of headache related to the chronic sinusitis is known to be less localized, prolonged, non-progressive and dull constant sensation of pressure. However, as to the patient who has a chronic sinusitis, it is questionable that the
headache is really caused by paranasal sinus itself. We investigated the 92 patients(M : 48, F : 44, mean age : 32 years old) who were diagnosed having chronic sinusitis with headache in our department from September 1992 to September 1993. In
all
cases, paranasal sinus computed tomograms were performed and the histories of headache for specifying the chracteristics were taken carefully. We analysed the relationship between headache and the inflammatory involvement of sinuses, mucosal
contact
areas in the nasal cavity on ostiomeatal unit computed tomograms and headaches. The statistical test showed no significant relationship between the location of headache and sinusitis except frontal headache. The mucosal contact areas in the nasal
cavities on computed tomograms were correlated significantly with frontal headaches. In conclusion, we suggest that there is significant relationship between the frontal headache and chronic sinusitis and the headache of sinusitis is not from the
sinus
itself but probably from the nasal cavity.
